Did someone ask you to be in their cosplay group, but you have no idea what that means? Or maybe you’ve heard people talk about cosplay groups and it has got you interested.
Don’t worry you don’t have to feel stuck anymore not knowing what a cosplay group is, I’ll walk you through what exactly they are and the different types, so you sound like a pro.
So just what does it mean?
Here’s what the term Cosplay Group means:
Multiple cosplayers who have organized to be together during a particular time at a chosen location are defined as a cosplay group. However, there are several types of cosplay groups which I have explained in further detail below.

Types of Cosplay Groups
Now you know what a cosplay group is let’s take a deeper look into the different types and what they do!
Convention Cosplay Group
- This is the most typical cosplay group.
- These cosplay groups are normally organized before a convention (such as San Diego Comic-Con) where cosplays are decided for each person.
- Normally these cosplay groups are organized based on a particular fandom/movie/game/tv show etc.
- The cosplayers then all meet at the convention and walk around together in their chosen cosplay.
- Cosplay groups can be super impressive, especially if there are lots of cosplayers within the group!
- Some cosplay groups may even travel in together, so they all get to the convention at the same time to try and knock bystanders’ socks off!
Charity Cosplay Group
My most favorite type of cosplay group!
- As the name suggests, these groups are created for charity events.
- These cosplay groups are organized before the event where cosplays are decided for each person.
- Charity events normally require identification, especially if you are near children.
- The cosplayers then meet at the event and most of the time raise money or provide entertainment for charity purposes
- Being a part of these groups can be super fulfilling!
Paid Event Cosplay Group
- Same as the other group’s cosplays are organized and decided for each cosplayer.
- The main difference for this type of cosplay group is you get paid for cosplaying.
- Sometimes you may be paid in money, or you may be paid in goods (E.g., you get paid in promotional items or you get to go to the premiere of a movie/game!).
Friends Cosplay Group
This is a group of cosplayers who are friends that meet up together at a convention and walk around together. Their cosplays may or may not be from the same genre.
How do I join a Convention Cosplay Group?
These are super easy to find, go online and log into your social media. There will be convention groups/forums where cosplayers ask other cosplayers to join a cosplay group.
Or sometimes you may even see someone post something on their story on Instagram asking if anyone would like to join their cosplay group, if it sounds interesting to you send them a message and get more details!
Remember to make sure you are interested in the idea and are ready to commit to that particular cosplay as it would suck if you no longer decided to be a part of the group so close to the event.
How do I join a Charity Cosplay Group?
Most of the time these charity cosplay groups are advertised on social media, so if you are interested just send them a message asking for more details.
Sometimes you can also ask charities directly if they would like any cosplayers to raise money/awareness.
Just remember if you want to be a part of these groups, you generally need some type of police/children to check (it all depends on where you live) so make sure to ask about this before you commit to the event.
How do I join a Paid Cosplay Group?
These can be a little tricky, sometimes you can find these groups on social media but they’re generally not as easy to find as the other groups.
Being a part of these groups can depend a lot on your social media exposure, if you are being paid then companies need something from you in return. This could range from you posting content on your social media pages or even going to an event they’ve organized.
A lot of the time they will contact you rather than you contacting them.
And in all honesty, this could be a whole other post on what to do so you can get these companies to contact you so I’ll keep it simple here and leave it at that.
Well look at you now, you’re a cosplay group pro. Cosplaying in groups can not only be an awesome experience but can also be super fulfilling, it can also mean you can be a part of some special moments and make new friends along the way.
Do you know of any other types of cosplay groups? If so, let me know and I’ll add it to the list!
