Can You Cosplay At Universal Studios? (Rules Explained)

I’ve always loved seeing guests at Universal Studios dressing in their house robes (Harry Potter) and have often wanted to do it too, but was curious if it was allowed.

So please check out my research below to understand if you can cosplay at Universal Studios and if so, are there any rules involved?

Can You Cosplay At Universal Studios?

Yes, you can cosplay at Universal Studios but there are rules involved.

I have broken down the rules in the rest of this article for you so you don’t get caught out and stuck outside the gates.

What Are The Rules For Cosplaying At Universal Studios?

Based off of the Costume Guidelines section on the Universal Studios Website the following rules apply:

  • You are allowed to cosplay but you are not allowed to wear masks or veils (you cannot cover your face).
  • You must not bring any weapons such as prop swords into Universal Studios.
  • You are allowed to bring in your own wand but it must be rounded on both ends and appropriate.
  • Cosplays cannot exceed 28 inches wide x 80 inches high, this is to meet the metal detectors at Universal Studios standards. (At Universal Orlando)
  • If you are cosplaying you must not give the impression that you are Universal Studios team members (i.e., you are not staff there).

One last important note to remember is that Universal Studios may ask you to change into something more appropriate if they do not pass off your cosplay as “permissible.”

Remember to bring a spare set of clothes just in case they ask you to change.

Can I Go On Universal Studios Attractions If I’m Cosplaying?

Based on the information in the Costume Guidelines, there may be a chance that Universal will not allow you onto some attractions if you are wearing a cosplay.

Use common sense here and assume that if you cosplay is not extremely bulky (i.e., an iron man or batman suit) then you should be fine. However, if it’s a big cosplay and not “normal” clothes then this may be the case where they will not allow you to be involved.

My best advice is to get in contact with Universal to ensure that they are ok with your cosplay if it is more of a bulky cosplay.

Can I Bring My Own Wand To Universal Studios?

Yes, you are allowed to bring your own wand to Universal Studios. However, be aware if it is a home made wand then it needs to be rounded on both ends and be appropriate in nature.

How To Prepare For Cosplaying At Universal Studios

First off, have a read through this article and then go to the Costume Guidelines section on the Universal Studios website here.

Get in contact with Universal Studios if you want to wear a bulky cosplay such as an iron man suit.

Pack an extra set of clothes just in case on the day Universal Studios will not allow you inside unless you change.

If you are planning to cosplay, take a common sense approach when deciding on what cosplay you’d like to wear.
